A1A opened in 1927 as Atlantic Boulevard. Later it was called State Road 1. In November 1946, to avoid confusion with nearby U.S. 1, the state gave it its current name.
State Road A1A, designated a state historical highway in several stretches, may be the best know road in Florida. A1a runs mostly along the Atlantic Ocean, with sections from Key West at the southern tip of Florida, to Fernandina Beach, just south of Georgia on Amelia Island.
For many it is a symbol of the easygoing beachcomber lifestyle. I know it is for me! I have visited Florida on and off since I was an infant. We would stay anywhere from Daytona Beach, Boca Raton, Miami down to Marathon Key and Key West. It feels like home to me and I think that is why I was so comfortable in my transition moving down to Florida over three years ago.
My idea for this site came from my love of the beach and my love of driving A1A! On many trips I take whether it is a short drive down A1A or further down the coast, I will take A1A over 95. I would much rather take a little extra time and enjoy the ocean views.
What do you love about A1A?
